20 Confessions To Grow Your Faith From Little to Great

God has called us to live by faith—to walk in faith (2 Corinthians 5:7), but for us to stay in faith and grow in our faith, we’ll have to stay in the Word of God. Daily. Continually. We will need to keep it before our eyes, going in our ears and coming out of our mouths. This is the primary way we increase our capacity for faith. It’s how we go from having little faith in a situation to having great faith in a situation.

There’s a story in the New Testament of a man who brought his demon-possessed boy to Jesus, and it illustrates so well the different levels of faith we can have—and how it can change. The man started by saying, “Teacher, I brought my son so you could heal him. He is possessed by an evil spirit that won’t let him talk. And whenever this spirit seizes him, it throws him violently to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast out the evil spirit, but they couldn’t do it” (Mark 9:17-18).

When Jesus replied, He addressed the disciples first: “You faithless people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me” (Mark 9:19).

When they did, Jesus asked the boy’s father how long his son had been suffering this way. The man replied, “Since he was a little boy. The spirit often throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him. Have mercy on us and help us, if you can” (Mark 9:21-22).

“What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes” (Mark 9:23).

And what the father said next gives us great hope that, with God’s help, we can grow our faith. “The father instantly cried out, ‘I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!’” (Mark 9:24).

How many of us have needed God’s help to believe, to overcome where our faith stopped and fear wanted to take over? It’s those moments we prepare for by increasing our faith continually and by being in the Word consistently.
